In February of 1965 Joni Mitchell gave birth to a baby girl, but having no income, she put her in foster care. She continued her music career with songs that were wise beyond her years. Her voice NOW is deeper and much more expressive than ever.
In 1997 she reunited with the daughter she hadn't seen in 32 years. She says,"I started writing when I lost my daughter, and I stopped when she came back." Now she paints. The cover of this albumn (CD) is an example.
It's very interesting that these are "old" songs. I used to sing them years ago, but with life passages, they take on new meanings, more poignant, more clarity, more fulfilling.
BOTH SIDES NOW
Rows and floes of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feather caynons ev'rywhere
I've looked at clouds the way
But now they only block the sun
They rain and they snow on ev'ryone
So many things I would have done
But clouds got in my way
I've looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
It's cloud illusions I recall
I really don't know clouds
At all.........
Moons and Junes and Ferris wheels
The dizzy dancing way that you feel
As ev'ry fairy tale comes real
I've looked at love that way
But now it's just another show
And you leave 'em laughing when you go
and if you care, don't let them know
Don't give yourself away
I've looked at love from both sides now
From give and take, and still somehow
It's love's illusions that I recall
I really don't know love
I really don't know love
At all.....
Tears and fears and feeling proud
To say "I love you" right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds
I've looked at life that way
Oh, but now old friends, they're acting strange
And they shake their heads, and they tell me that I've changed
Well something's lost, but something's gained
In living ev'ry day
Oh, I've looked at life from both sides now
From win and lose, and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life
At all....
It's life's illusions that I recall
I really don't know love
I really don't know love
At all........

Thanks for giving the rest of the words to the song. It was niggling at me! xoxo
I had all her albums, back when they were albums, and remember crying when I read about her reunion with her daughter. Margo
That has always been one of my favorite songs. I never knew Mitchell placed a daughter in foster care.

I love this song. Had no idea about the child.
What a beautiful painting.

I thought I read in "Rolling Stone" a few years ago that Joni had MS. Does she mention this in any of her songs? She's a musical goddess. Russ
Hi :)
Joni Mitchell is amazing, and yes her songs transcend time and do take on a different meaning as we experience life... . Lovely entry.
Always, Carly :)
This is my favorite Joni Mitchell songs. It spoke to me from the first time I heard it. Thanks for reminding me of it. : )
